WEST Lothian is the perfect spot for a staycation with lots of great ideas for summer.
From exploring the great outdoors, to discovering the area’s rich heritage and history, as well as some great attractions for family fun or to get the adrenalin pumping, there really is something for everyone.
*Five Sisters Zoo, near West Calder, is fast becoming one of West Lothian’s most popular gems, where visitors can get close and handle a range of exotic creatures, including lemurs, meerkats, pythons and tarantulas. You’ll also get to meet Carmen, Peggy and Suzy, three circus bears which the zoo recently rescued and are now very much at home in a specially created woodland area. Kids can also escape to the zoo’s large soft play area and explore the outdoor castle and pirate ship.
*For those looking to make a splash, the Low Port Centre is the perfect place to set sail. Situated close to Linlithgow, the Low Port Centre is one of Scotland’s premier outdoor centres, boasting a wide selection of water based activities. With an extensive range of kayaks, canoes, play boats and riverboats, Low Port offers everything from taster sessions to adventure river trips. If you have a head for heights then the Low Port Centre also boasts an indoor climbing wall and the team also runs courses for beginners or for the most advanced climber.
*Golfers should hit the fairways at Kingsfield Golf Centre, near Linlithgow. As well as a beautiful USGA Specification 9 Hole Golf Course, you can also sharpen your putting skills on the Ochils’ Family Putting Green or practice your seven iron at the state of the art of floodlit driving range.
*For horse lovers, Hopetoun House will host the Gillespie Macandrew Hopetoun Horse Trials between Saturday, July 28 – Sunday, July 29, for the second year running. Following on from the success of last year’s event, some of the world’s top equestrian stars will compete against the backdrop of West Lothian’s most majestic stately homes.
As well as children’s entertainment there will be great shopping on offer as well as some fine food and drink to round up what is set to be an action packed two day event.
