DJ Laing East of Scotland Cup Round 2

The value of the sizeable squad was put to the test as Bo’ness United were stretched due to injuries and absences.

Will Snowdon and Chris Donnelly were missing through injury and Ian Nimmo was on leave after the birth of his son. There was further concern within the first 10 minutes of the game when Stewart Devine pulled up and had to be replaced.

The result of all of this was starting places for Scott Gibb and Craig Scott and Chic Connolly replaced Devine, improvising in the left back position.

Bo’ness got their noses in front after only four minutes as Andy Scott crossed from the right and Gribben headed high into the net.

Newtongrange should have equalised 10 minutes later when the ball rebounded off the post after Peat had saved from Jamieson but with the goal gaping Cropley somehow missed from close in.

It was end to end stuff and Peat made another significant save, diverting a King volley round his post.

Miller found himself in a good position to double the home side’s lead only for his chipped effort to go straight into the arms of Star keeper Renton.

Before the break Peat made another good save, this time stopping a Noble shot to ensure Bo’ness retained
a narrow lead. Just after the restart Jamieson headed over from a King free-kick cross while only a good tackle by Gibson stopped Miller’s run on the Star goal. The same player came close with a shot that was just over.

The game changed in 55 minutes when Bo’ness doubled their lead. A Gibb free-kick from deep was headed on by Hunter and Andy Scott volleyed in from six yards.

This seemed to knock the stuffing from the visitors and when Hislop was introduced in 65 minutes worse was to follow. The BU striker’s first touch proved lethal when he knocked in a low cross from Gribben.

That was in 67 minutes and six minutes later Hislop collected a good pass from Walker before cutting in from the left to angle past Renton.

Bo’ness were safe but a late lapse saw Jamieson go through to beat Peat and just on the whistle Peat saved from Jamieson after a short Gribben pass back but the ball landed nicely for Forster to curl it in from the edge of the box.

BU Man of the Match: Andy Scott.

Bo’ness: Peat, Miller (Hislop 65), Devine (Connolly 9), Murphy, Hunter, Gibb, Walker, Sloan (Gardner 80), A Scott, C Scott, Gribben. Subs (not used): T Jaconelli, Wallace.
