muay Thai boxer Helen Wilson from Linlithgow has become the UKMF Scottish champion in a bout heralded as the “Clash of the Titans”.
Helen took on Sophie Gallacher from Greenock, in the 58kg B Class, in what she described as one of her toughest fights, at Grangemouth Town Hall.
Out of her eight fights, Helen has won six and lost two. Sophie Gallacher has taken part in 25 fights, resulting in 19 wins, five losses, and one draw. Helen knew she faced a mammoth task but was well prepared for the challenge.
She said: “I have seen Sophie fight before but this is the first time we have met in a competition. I knew she was going to be good and that was the case. However, I beat her in the clinch which was my best move against her.”
She was also overwhelmed by the great support at Grangemouth, including her family, which, she said, gave her a great buzz. “It was amazing,” she said. “I couldn’t believe how many people came to give me support.”
There was a busload of supporters from Greenock so there was plenty of encouragement for Sophie but the locals helped make it Helen’s night.
Helen gave herself a week off and is set to get back into the ring, but it wasn’t easy. She explained: “Since my win, I have been on such a high. I was so excited I couldn’t sleep and I just wanted to get back into training, but it was more sensible to take time out.”
Helen will be looking to her ISKA British title bid at Leeds in August when she will meet Amanda Ward who has had two knock-outs.
Helen has fought her once before and won on points, but she knows she has a tough fight on her hands, probably the hardest she has ever faced.
