A BO’NESS striker is following in the footsteps of his footballing hero, David Beckham, by jetting off to the USA to progress his playing career.

Jordan Burns has been snapped up on a four-year soccer scholarship by Arizona Western College in Yuma, Arizona.

The 18-year-old, latterly of Stenhousemuir U19s, will study for a PE and music degree while playing in the college soccer team.

He will be the only European, lining up alongside Brazilians and Mexicans – his new coach has already recommended learning Spanish!

Jordan, of Dean Road, admitted he was so excited to get the contract last Tuesday, he only had about five hours sleep over the next two days.

“Hopefully this is going to be the next chapter in my life,” he said.

“It means the world to me, this scholarship is what I’ve wanted to do for the past two years.

“Hopefully the future will turn out bright for me. Football is my life. This is a great opportunity for me to progress even more.”

Jordan impressed selectors via video footage showing his skills with Stenhousemuir, during ‘showreel games’ shot for the Sporting Futures USA application, and Sky Sports coverage of the Scotland schoolboys team he was in, season 2010-11.

He will be Arizona-bound in the next few weeks, and within a day of arriving, will set off on a pre-season tour that takes in California.

There will be no let up in his tight schedule, and once competition starts – games can be played in 45 degree heat – he’ll be travelling from Las Vegas to LA for away matches.

Jordan will miss watching Bo’ness United and playing with Bo’ness and Carriden Band, plus his friends and supportive family – including parents Fiona and Tom, sister Hannah and both sets of grandparents.

But he said: “My long-term ambition is to stay over there and try to make my future in America.”
