Southern discomfort as rugby Reds fall
Annan pounce on slow start
Annan …………….. .25
Linlithgow ……….... 14
WITHOUT a league win since January, the 1st XV went to Annan to face a side with a formidable home record.
Reds made the haul with a strong team, only missing Jack Walker from the regular squad.
But another slow start allowed Annan to strike first with a penalty.
This was followed by two tries and a conversion within the first quarter.
When Annan added another penalty the writing seemed on the wall but excellent tackling by full-back Richardson, aided by winger Birrell, stopped the flow.
With slightly better possession Reds mounted attacks with a try by winger Green disallowed just before half-time.
Annan struck quickly with a speculative hack-on, scoring under the posts but this was followed by yet another run from Billy Edment who raced half the length of the park to score.
Reds started to play with more organisation and an excellent take by Andy Birrell saw him run it back against the Annan forwards.
He sent a high kick behind the defence and Edment was there to pressure the full-back into touching down in goal.
From the scrum Hammond nipped in for a try at the posts, Dixon adding his second conversion.
With 15 minutes to go Annan did not panic and played percentage rugby by keeping the Reds pinned back.
Reds: Richardson, Birrell, D MacKenzie, G MacKenzie, Green, Dixon, Hammond, Cavana, Edment, Gunn, Waddell, Robson, Dobie, Jamieson, Johnstone. Subs: Wylie, Clydesdale, McKenzie.
