Gleneagles beckons golfer Stephen Gallacher later this month where he will feature in GB and Europe’s star-studded Ryder Cup team.
The Kingsfield Golf Centre affiliated pro, ranked 34 in the world, just failed to make the team automatically finishing third in Italy on Sunday when he needed a win or second place to secure an automatic place on the team.
After the announcement, Stephen (39) said: “It’s massive for me and my family.
‘‘It’s been a goal all my career to play in The Ryder Cup and I was delighted to get the call from Paul (McGinley, team captain).
Stephen is the only rookie in the GB and Europe team which is looking to retain the coveted trophy it won in spctacular style on North American soil in 2012.
McGinley said of Gallacher: ‘‘I think his performance in Italy, under the spotlight, was huge.
‘‘He’ll look back at that at the end of his career, whatever he goes on to achieve, as one of the highlights, if not the highlight.’’
There was joy that the West Lothian golfer, who grew up in Dechmont, had made the team.
First Minister Alex Salmond said: “I’m delighted Stephen Gallacher has been selected for Team Europe.
‘‘His selection is testament to his wonderful run of form and consistency throughout the season and is undoubtedly a huge personal honour for Stephen himself.
‘‘Stephen has an enviable record at Gleneagles and I have no doubt that he will become an integral part of Paul McGinley’s team.’’
West Lothian Council leader John McGinty said: “This is fantastic news for Stephen Gallacher and his family, many of whom are from West Lothian.
‘‘Stephen is an inspiration to many people playing the game and this will be celebrated at golf clubs across West Lothian.
“Stephen is a local boy and we were already very proud of him and everything that he has achieved to date.
‘‘To be named in this elite group of European golfers is a career defining moment for him.
‘‘I’m sure he will enjoy this moment and look forward to the Ryder Cup getting underway.”
