THE Rose stretched their lead at the top of the Super League to five points after a hard-earned win over local rivals Bo’ness at the weekend.
And with a trip to Kelty in the league in prospect tomorrow (Saturday), the Rose will look to increase their lead as contenders Bonnyrigg Rose and Lochee United are involved in cup business, while Bathgate and Forfar West End meet in the league too.
Rose boss Dave Baikie was jubilant after the match even though his side were on the back foot for spells in the game. He said: “At the end of the day, we scored two goals to their one and picked up the three points!”
Baikie said: “We were happy to get the result as Bo’ness had lengthy spells in the game where they dominated but we were strong defensively and took our chances and got the goals that mattered.”
Despite going ahead within four minutes thanks to a Dario Quinn strike, Baikie was not happy with his side’s first half performance.
He said that while Bo’ness may feel a little unfortunate to leave Prestonfield without a point, he heaped praise on his defence for the way they nullified the BUs constant attacking threat, especially in the latter stages of the match, saying both Dario Quinn and club captain John Ward were “immense.”
Baikie said his aim was to now extend their lead in the league to create even more daylight between the Rose and the opposition.
He said: “After losing out in the Scottish, I said my priority was to win the league and the remaining trophies. We want to keep the momentum going and I will be calling on the players not to slip up in the weeks ahead.”
With the Rose placed as favourites, 2/1 on, to win the Super League title with bookmakers William Hill, Baikie knows only too well the league run-in will be difficult with all teams desperate to take points from them.
He said: “We are aware that the next second half of the league campaign will be challenging but the Rose have been there before and we know what it takes to become champions.”
