INCONSISTENCY all season cost Linlithgow Rose the East Region Super League title according to boss Dave Baikie this week.
A flummoxed Baikie said he could not understand how his side could convincingly trounce local rivals Bo’ness United 4-0 one week yet fail miserably to perform against Bonnyrigg Rose seven days later.
‘‘Bonnyrigg looked hungrier and sharper,’’ he said. ‘‘And I can’t understand why we were so poor when we were very much in with a chance of winning the league!’’
With regular keeper Steve Pinkowski and Mark Tyrell absent Baikie could at least take consolation from the fact that he had to field a rather less than full-strength side.
He went on: ‘‘To be fair, I don’t think we deserved to win the league though.
‘‘We’ve been inconsistent all season and never really had a settle backed four. We’ve chopped and changed all the time.’’
Speaking from Majorca, Baikie said he had just learned that the Rose have home advantage in next Saturday’s John Walker sponsored Fife and Lothians Cup final.
‘‘I’m not sure that makes much difference but there should be no difficulty in ensuring that the squad is up for the final game of the season given that our opponents are Bo’ness United!’’
Baikie had considered playing a friendly fixture this weekend but with most clubs having wound down their operation for the close season that did not prove possible.
‘‘We’ll train on Saturday and again in midweek and that two week break should enable any injuries to clear up - not that we have many casualties anyway.
‘‘Then we can look forward to the cup final with confidence,’’ he said.
