Be safe from summer crime

THE police have appealled to the public to guard against thieves over the summer.

In a number of recent incidents, opportunists have taken advantage of unsecured windows and doors, and the good weather has highlighted dangers faced by residents who don’t secure their homes.

Detective Inspector John Wyllie, from Lothian and Borders police, said: “I would urge members of the public to be aware that opportunities for most of us to enjoy ourselves also present opportunities for thieves. What I would ask is that people take sensible precautions. If you are planning to be in your garden, consider locking your doors and closing your ground floor windows so people don’t have a chance to enter your house whilst you are distracted. If you leave windows open, ensure they are secured on a latch or similar. If you are parking your car please secure it properly as thieves do look for easy targets presented by open windows, boots and even keys left in the ignition.”
