GREEN fingers can get to work with the launch of the 2011 Garden’s Competition.

The popular West Lothian event has ran for over 30 years and for the first time this year there are two new categories to compete in. All local householders are eligible to take part, entry is free and there are over 40 prizes to be won.

There are ten area categories, but West Lothian wide contests include best vegetable garden, floral containers, gardening for wildlife and best flower garden.

Colin Bell, the council’s competition organiser, said: “Each year, more and more people get involved in the competition and we are looking forward to another fantastic crop of entries again this year.”

The two new categories are the Tallest Sunflower Challenge and the Best New Entrant. The Tallest Sunflower Challenge category is open to children living in West Lothian up to 12 years of age. Judging will start the week of Monday August 8, with the exception of the ‘Tallest Sunflower’ which will be judged in September.

To enter phone the council’s Customer Service Centre on 01506 775000 or email customer.service@westlothian.gov.uk The closing date for entries is Friday July 8 and the prize ceremony will be held in the Burgh Halls, Linlithgow on November 4.
