Bo’ness United defender Colin Leiper showed his dedication to BUs’ Super League title charge last weekend – by breaking away from his own honeymoon and leaving his wife in a hotel to play for the Newtown Park club on Saturday.
Leiper, who tied the knot with his wife Lauren on Sunday, April 19, went away for a romantic break to Ardgartan last Friday.
With the couple planning their main break in Cyprus in the summer, they wanted a pleasant “mini-honeymoon” long weekend after the stresses of organising a wedding.
However, Leiper, a mainstay in the Bo’ness defence had other ideas as he risked the wrath of his new wife by travelling back to West Lothian to help Bo’ness defeat Lochee 4-0.
“When I told her my plans on Thursday, the atmosphere became quite frosty,” Leiper said. “I said it wasn’t as if we were away abroad or that – we were only 30 or 40 miles away and it would only take me a couple of hours to get to Bo’ness and I would go back up the road immediately after the game.
“The atmosphere was still frosty the next day. I was thinking that we had the rest of our lives together but this may be my only chance of winning the Super League. I’m not sure she appreciated that.”
