Couple marks 50 happy married years together

FIFTY years on and still going strong Henry and Jean McMeechan are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary this weekend.

Henry (71) and Jean (70) may have been from friendly rival towns Linlithgow and Bo’ness respectively but that wasn’t going to stop romance blossoming.

The pair met while putting down at the Peel in Linlithgow and spent a lot of their courting ice skating down at Falkirk Ice Rink. After a couple of years, Henry who worked at Kingsfield Farm, and Jean, a dispenser at Boots, set a date to be married.

Jean said: “We were married in Bo’ness and were the first couple to be married in St Mary’s Church in 1961 so we featured in the Journal and Gazette then as well. Unfortunately the building hasn’t lasted as long as us!”

The couple who now live at Preston Road, Linlithgow have three children Kevin, Gillian and Brenda and seven grandchildren who will be celebrating with them this weekend. Following the wedding anniversary today (Friday), the family are having a special golden wedding mass at St Michael’s RC Church, Linlithgow on Saturday morning and a party in the evening.

On the secret of 50 years of happiness, Jean added: “It’s important for each person to have their own hobbies and have different interests. We also each have friends that we go out with.

“But the important things we do together. We both like going on holiday and we like to go on cruises. We don’t let an argument go on - you shouldn’t sleep on it.”
