Attacked inmate '˜because he was black'

An offender punched and kicked a fellow inmate at Polmont Young Offenders Institution simply because of the colour of his skin.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, lashed out at his victim during recreation time at the institution and officers had to intervene.

Appearing at Falkirk Sheriff Court last Thursday, the teenager had previously pled guilty to the racially aggravated assault he committed at the YOI in Redding Road, Brightons on February 15.

Procurator fiscal depute Samantha Brown said: “He said the motive for attacking the complainer was because he was black.”

Sentence was deferred for three months to obtain a social inquiry report.
