Alasdair Cairns grabbed his victim in the bedroom before dragging her across the floor and down the stairs, banging her head on each step on the way.

He then pulled the woman into the kitchen, stuck his nails into her neck as he straddled her and repeatedly punched her on the head saying “I could kill you”.

At Falkirk Sheriff Court last week the 22-year-old thug was sent to prison for 230 days for the horror assault at the house in Kersiebank Avenue, Grangemouth, in the early hours of February 21.

The court was told that, on the evening of February 20 Cairns had arrived at his mother’s home intoxicated.

She took him ‘home’ to Kersiebank Avenue, but phoned his partner, who was out with her mum, to let her know about the state he was in.

When she got back to her house she found the livingroom trashed and Cairns upstairs.

After she confronted him about the damage, Cairns demanded she return jewellery she was wearing that he had given her and then attacked her.

The woman finally managed to get away and ran bare foot from the house along the street shouting for help.

After banging on a number of doors she finally woke a neighbour who called police.

The court heard she was “extremely upset, bleeding and traumatised” when she was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Police who arrested Cairns later that day in the house found pools of blood in the kitchen and hallway and “clear signs” of a disturbance.

Defence lawyer Lynn Swann said: “He accepts this was a dreadful matter and something he regrets. He was heavily under the influence of alcohol at the time and alcohol continues to be a difficulty for him. He is prone to binge drinking.”

Ms Swan urged a community-based sentence, but Sheriff Derek Livingston ruled it out.

Noting that Cairns, from 40 Belsyde Court, Linlithgow, had a conviction for assault to serious injury he told him: “This offence was appalling and deserves custody. You pulled her down stairs, punched her and she had to run away bare foot from her own home.”
