Police have highlighted a new scam which sees con merchants pretending to be representatives from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in order to gain access to personal details.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “HMRC have picked up a new scam where criminals e-mail people a fake ‘failed direct debit’ alert, pretending to be from HMRC, to steal their personal and financial details.

“This is a scam. Do not respond and report it to the HMRC.”
