West Lothian Schools Pipe Band are celebrating their highest title yet having been crowned the Champion of Champions in their grade.

It is awarded to the band which performed best at five major pipe band championships throughout the year.

The talented group of local young people, which included Ben Miller from Linlithgow and Shannon Gould from Westfield, had a fantastic competition season, scooping an incredible 12 trophies.

These included first place at both the UK Pipe Band Championships in Belfast and the European championships in Forres.

And top four finishes at three other major championships saw them win the sought-after Champion of Champions trophy for the Novice Juvenile grade.

The trophies represent the first major title wins for the band, which began playing competitively in 2011. They have now been promoted and will compete in the Juvenile grade next season.

Executive councillor for education Lawrence Fitzpatrick said: “I’m delighted to congratulate West Lothian Schools Pipe Band on what has been an incredible season.

“To win 12 trophies and be crowned Champion of Champions is a fantastic achievement and shows how far they have come in a short space of time.

“We can all now look forward to cheering on the ‘Westies’ in the Juvenile grade.

“It’s a deserved reward for all the hard work put in by all the young people from schools across West Lothian who make up the band and their tutors, Pipe Major Gordon Bruce and drumming tutor David Ross, as well as all the families who support them.”

Provost of West Lothian, Tom Kerr, said he was pleased to see that the council’s foresight in 2007 in employing a full-time piping tutor for local schools had paid dividends.

He added:“I am absolutely delighted to learn of this further success by the West Lothian Schools Pipe Band in earning such a prestigious title.

“Every individual who plays in that band can rightly be extremely proud of their outstanding achievement, particularly when there are so many pressures these days on young people.

“The band are also extremely fortunate to have such a hard-working background team, including tutors, parents and friends.

“For the financial costs alone are huge in terms of fundraising to cover the band’s costs.”
