DESPITE the dismal weather, Falkirk Council hopes green-fingered residents in Bo’ness, Blackness and Whitecross will take part in its annual garden competition.

Entries are accepted until Monday, July 30, so spruce up your garden and show off your horticultural handiwork.

The competition’s open to everyone, with prizes to reward effort and excellence in five geographical areas across the district, and seven categories.

Provost Pat Reid said: “You may have a floral display or just home grown vegetables, it doesn’t matter how big or small your garden is, so why not have a go and send in your entry form.”

Preliminary judging will be carried out in early August with a shortlist drawn up before final judging on Monday, August 6.

Prize categories are: private house garden, council house garden, senior citizen, newcomer, church garden, small garden and wildlife garden, plus 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall winners.

All categories are judged on their general appearance and layout, use of plant material within the garden, standard of cultivation and maintenance.
