Burn is being used as a dump say angry anglers

A set of caravan steps, a car bumper and five children's scooters were just a few pieces of litter pulled out the Mains Burn on Saturday morning, alongside numerous bottles and cans, during Linlithgow Angling Club's annual spring clean of the town's waterways.

Also found were several Sainsbury’s advertising banners.

A club spokesperson said: “It is clear this waste is being discarded by children, adults and corporate organisations alike. It is disheartening that we have had to target the Mains Burn on four occasions now as locals treat it as a dumping ground for lunch wrappings and bottles, for hot food carry-out containers and white plastic forks and the off-licence carry-out of cans and bottles of beer and spirits, not to mention the filled dog-poo bags!

“Last week we had children from Linlithgow Primary School release young trout that they had grown from eggs in a classroom project. The Mains Burn is a known nursery for brown trout and migratory fish – sea trout/salmon – and we are doing our best to keep it as such but require the public to do its part also. Litter - take it home or use the bin.”

West Lothian Council who loaned the use of pickers and bag hoops and uplifted the waste on the following Sunday, thanked the club for its continued work in the community.
