Street cleaning contractors hired in West Lothian
West Lothian Council has hired contractors to catch-up with keeping roads and pavements clean to meet new statutory legislation rules.
The Environmental Protection Act always placed a duty on the council to keep streets litter free, but an additional duty to keep areas free of detritus (silt, sand, loose chippings/gravel) has now been placed on local councils.
Andy Johnston, from the council’s NETs and countryside teams explained the council had issued a six week contract hiring in sweepers to work on A,B and C roads “to get ahead of the game”.
The contract is expected to be completed by the end of this month. The council’s own equipment will focus on removing detritus from our town centres and residential areas.
The changes were described to recent meetings of local area committees.
