Family pay tribute to teenager killed in cycling accident

Iain Wightman died following a collision with a vehicle on Monday

Iain Wightman (18) collided with a Land Rover between Dalmeny and Kirkliston on Monday and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His heartbroken family paid tribute to a “wonderful boy” and keen sportsman who excelled at rugby and cycling.

In a statement, they said: “Iain was a wonderful, wonderful boy, much loved and missed by his brother Colin, sister Katie and mum and dad.

“He wanted to train to be an Olympic cyclist and was a great rugby player.

“He is a great loss in our lives and will never be forgotten by those that knew him and we wish he was back with us.”

Iain, who was from Falkirk and worked for Caledonian Produce in Bo’ness, played rugby for both Larbert High School and Falkirk Rugby Club.

A tribute on the club’s Facebook page said the world would be a “sadder and poorer place without him”.

It added: “Iain was part of our junior set-up for many years and a popular young man. Not only was he a good rugby player but he was a good person who had a bright future ahead. He was a fierce competitor with a never-say-die attitude.

“He had taken some time out of rugby to focus on his other passion, cycling.

“What makes this loss even harder to bear was that he was only 18. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and loved ones at this difficult time.

“You are in our thoughts and prayers. The world is a sadder and poorer place without you, Iain.”

John Walker, who taught the cyclist at Carrongrange School, described his death as a “devastating” blow in an online tribute.

He added: “Iain Wightman died on Monday morning as a result of a road traffic accident outside Edinburgh. He was 18 years of age. Iain left Carrongrange School this time last year, and I was his class teacher from S3 to S6.

“He overcame many tribulations in his childhood to develop into a fine young man with a bright future before him.

“Needless to say, staff and pupils who knew Iain are in deep shock. Thoughts go out to his family at this terrible time.”

The incident happened on Standingstane Road at its junction with Burnshot Road at around 10.30am on Monday.

A silver Land Rover Discovery travelling from Kirkliston on Burnshot Road was involved in the collision.

Floral tributes and messages of condolence have been laid at the roadside close to the junction. Police said investigations into the incident were continuing.
