A bumper crowd gathered in Market Square, Bo’ness, to kick start the festive season.
A dull, overcast morning gave way to blue skies and some winter sunshine as the town’s Christmas illuminations lit up on the dot of 4pm courtesy of Fair Queen Louise Wilson and some heavyweight helpers in the shape of Bailie Billy Buchanan, two Mutant Ninja Turtles and a man wearing a red coat who alternately thrilled and terrified the youngsters present!
Hundreds of families had been gathering round the temporary stage to be entertained by The Tonkerers and a Michael Buble tribute act for a couple of hours and the kids were definitely getting restless. Also entertaining the crowds were Bo’ness youth dance act Street Bratz and the Bo’ness Dance Academy.
Cue the entrance, to raucous dance music, of two have-a-go heroes of yesteryear and who are currently undergoing something of a revival - Ninja Turtles Michelangelo and Donatello - who had the youngsters eating out of their hands and queuing up to get their pictures taken with the dynamic duo!
Santa Claus was a wee bit of an anti-climax after all this excitement as he and the Turtles duly took the stage for the lights countdown and, it has to be said, the rather splendid illuminations were welcomed with a big round of applause.
Speaking after the ceremony Bailie Billy Buchanan said: ‘‘I thought that went off rather well!
‘‘Not too much fuss and plenty of fun – and it was a privilege and a joy to come to Bo’ness and stand in for the unavailable Provost Pat Reid.’’
