A well-used country park, much-loved by visitors, is set to benefit from a huge investment, ensuring its future for years to come.

Beecraigs Country Park, on the outskirts of Linlithgow, was the subject of a proposal to invest £461,000 in a new visitor centre.

And the plans have now been approved by West Lothian’s Council Executive.

The council’s capital programme for 2015/16 had allocated £194,000 to upgrade the existing visitor centre.

However, the programme is continually being reviewed to ensure appropriate adjustments are made when necessary.

And now additional resources of £267,000 have been earmarked to allow Beecraigs Country Park to enhance its facilities for visitors and grow its business in the future.

With a healthier attitude to lifestyle, and more and more families using the ‘great outdoors’ for recreation, country parks and green spaces are under ever increasing pressure to provide facilities.

Beecraigs is currently used by fishermen, walkers and cyclists.

The proposals will see the existing, vacant restaurant building reconfigured to provide a visitor centre with office space, a cafe and the opportunity for an additional franchise business to operate within it.

Executive councillor for the environment Tom Conn said: “The visitor centre is now past its life expectancy and investment in the current building would not be cost effective.

“I’m sure that the proposal to upgrade the existing restaurant building, which is currently empty, will be welcomed by everyone who regularly uses the park.

“The new facilities in the restaurant building will be fit for purpose and meet the needs of Beecraigs Country Park well into the future.”
Beecraigs Country Park was most recently awarded 4 Star Visitor Attraction grading by VisitScotland in recognition of its high standard of facility provision.

The park also this year retained its 4 Star Touring Park Award by VisitScotland and its 4 Pennant Award from the AA.

In addition it was awarded a highly prestigious TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award for 2014, given to outstanding hospitality businesses who have received recognition in reviews by TripAdvisor.
