With the recent 50th anniversary of the opening of the Forth Road Bridge The 41 Club invited Past-Chairman Hector Woodhouse, to talk about his experiences as resident engineer during the building of the original bridge.
Hector explained how in 1959 he went direct from Heriot Watt University to work his summer vacation on the Forth Road Bridge, and how he was kept on, through to the completion of the bridge. He highlighted the technical challenges of the project and was able to share many anecdotes. Hector’s ‘claim to fame’ was that he and fellow engineer, Alan MacDonald, were jointly the first ever people to cross the, then incomplete, bridge. Club members thoroughly enjoyed Hector’s informative presentation.
