VILLAGERS in Torphichen have gone to the Scottish Government after their water supply has been hit by numerous interruptions over the past 18 months.

Aileen Liddell of Greenside said: “We have had the full range of water supply interruptions in Torphichen, from no pressure, low pressure, high pressure, burst mains, more burst mains, planned shutdowns, non-planned shutdowns and discoloured water.

“Given the number of interruptions we have had in the last eighteen months, it seems ridiculous that a company (Scottish Water) can get away with this, and not even consider granting each household a goodwill payment or, better still, supply and fit a water butt to each house so that if this continues we will at least have water to flush our toilets!”

After over 30 days of interruptions in the last 18 months, Aileen has only been compensated £60, and is waiting on a further £20 for supply interruption in February, but this is not enough to cover the costs of going to the swimming pool for a shower, takeaway meals and phone calls to 0845 numbers, and she has written to Scottish MSP Alex Neil.

Lucy Carmichael of the Water Industry Team at the Scottish Government confirmed that Scottish Water was organising a meeting with local councillors and MSPs to discuss resident’s concerns and they would inform local residents of further work to be done. A final interruption to the water supply has been planned for the start of April.
