Free buses from Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations to Queensferry and Kirkliston have been safeguarded.

The city council subsidise the N43 service on January 1 to the tune of £4110 with buses every running every 15 minutes up to 4am.

But last week the council were set to withdraw the one-off night service to due to low passenger numbers last year.

The council were informed by First that just nine people used the service but after concerns of the withdrawal of the service were raised, it was found a computer glitch recorded the wrong figures and instead between 250 and 300 may have used the service.

Councillor Lesley Hinds, the council’s transport leader said: ‘‘Community activists in Queensferry and Kirkliston did not believe the figures obtained by council officials. Information has come to light that the figures the officials obtained were wrong and the correct figures for passenger numbers has been confirmed by First bus themselves.’’
