More than two decades later however, Hazel is branch secretary and the group is very close to her heart.
“We have a lot of fun, great companionship and a lot of support for each other” she explained.
The branch celebrated its 55th birthday party at Kirkliston Community Centre last week, where members enjoyed a quiz, a birthday cake and an entertaining performance from the ‘Cheesetown Crackers’ - a group of Kirkliston SWRI women whose 15 minute storytelling skit won the regional finals of Variations on a Theme.
In April, the ‘Cheesetown Crackers’ will take their performance to Dumfries, where they will represent Kirkliston in a contest with SWRI groups from across Southern Scotland.
The club’s ex-president Pat Carson, was presented with a special badge for her years of service to the rural.
Reflecting on the evening, Hazel said: “Sadly a few of our regulars were unable to make the party, which was a shame, but that didn’t stop us having a good night. It was a fun evening.”
