The women of Kinneil Bowling Club were presented with the town’s McLaren Trophy on Wednesday, an honour given to residents or groups for outstanding services to the community and for the benefit of others.

The big-hearted group have raised tens of thousands of pounds for good causes both locally and nationally for many years.

The philanthropic ladies use a variety of activities to raise the money such as bingo nights or shaking collection buckets and tins.

The award is in memory of the first ever Bo’ness Community Council secretary John McLaren, who also worked for the Bo’ness Journal back in the 1970s.

It is the community council which decides who receives the annual award and this year is the 28th time it has been presented.

Community council secretary Madelene Hunt was full of praise for the lady bowlers.

She said: “These women have done a tremendous amount of work for local groups and people and thoroughly deserve this award which recognises the fantastic work people do for this great community.

“I believe they have raised somewhere between £80-100,000 for good causes which is absolutely phenomenal. Their latest fundraiser was for the Sick Kids and raised around £1300.

“These women are true local heroes.”
