People in recovery from addiction could soon be offered yoga classes at the 1st Step Cafe in Linlithgow once vital funds to support the project have been raised.

A social enterprise in Edinburgh ran a one off class for service users and the yoga instructor said it was a hit with everyone who attended.

Now the challenge is to raise enough funding to offer the class to those who visit the cafe every week.

Lorraine Close, from Edinburgh Community Yoga, said the health benefits for people in recovery from addiction could be life changing.

She said: “They seemed to really enjoy the class.

“The main thing is that for someone whose nervous system is really deregulated, who has a fight or flight response, this class is specifically designed to rebalance the nervous system.

“It regulates the response in the brain and teaches them to be in the present moment.

“Quite often they are stuck reflecting on the past.”

Lorraine has been running a class at Serenity Cafe in Edinburgh, which is a similar organisation to the one in Linlithgow, for over a year now and she said the results have been outstanding.

Some of the people who battled addiction have even gone on to train as yoga instructors.

Kate Anthony volunteers at the 1st Step Cafe and hopes to be able to offer yoga regularly, as well as a range of different activities which could change the lives of those in recovery.

She said: “Next week we’re doing a drama therapy class so we want to offer a range of different things

“Our first yoga session was free and it’s very kind of people to offer their services.” She added that the challenge was to secure enough funding to offer an eight week course, costing £400.

Edinburgh Community Yoga Outreach are holding a fundraiser at their studio in the west end of Edinburgh on Sunday, October 25, at 1pm and Lorraine said everyone is welcome to attend to help raise money for their social enterprise.
