Grant Abbot has been appointed head teacher of Bathgate Academy on a permanent basis, following a short spell as acting head teacher.
Formerly a PE and Guidance teacher, Mr Abbot is not a stranger to West Lothian, having spent the past 4½ years at Linlithgow Academy where he was depute head teacher. Mr Abbot said that he was looking forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for Bathgate Academy.
He said: “In the short time I have been at the school I can already see how much potential there is and I am looking forward to working with staff and pupils to ensure that this potential is realised.”
As for his aspirations for the Academy, Mr Abbot commented that he wants to help build a dynamic and forward thinking learning environment where the needs of all learners can be met. Making a direct plea to parents, Mr Abbot stressed the continued need for parents and carers to actively and positively engage in their children’s learning.
“What our children experience every day at school is very different to what I and many parents would have experienced in our school days. However, what has not changed is the need for a strong partnership to exist between parents and teachers to help encourage, support and challenge our children to do their very best”
Mr Abbot concluded by saying: “Bathgate Academy pupils have recently reaffirmed the six core values that they think best sums up the Academy; Respect, Confidence, Achievement, Success, Ambition and Support. My aim and that of my staff is to ensure these values not only underpin everything Bathgate Academy does but are also the values we want to promote and nurture in all our children.’
Mr Abbot is from Dunfermline and has previously taught in Stirling and Fife.
Depute chief executive Moira Niven added: “I know Grant from his time at Linlithgow Academy where he built up an excellent reputation with parents, staff and pupils.
“Grant has an excellent record in Education and I am looking forward to working with him in the future to further enhance the learning experience for pupils at Bathgate Academy.”
Mr Abbot will be holding a Head Teacher Surgery every Thursday between 5pm -6pm at Bathgate Academy. This is an open invitation to both parents/carers and pupils, without the need for an appointment.
