Police Call: Armed to deal with terrorist threats

Plans are in place to train another 124 officers from existing staff and they will enhance the capacity and capability across the country.

This increase is in response to the latest assessments of threat from terrorism and criminal use of firearms.

Fewer than three per cent of officers will be deployed in a firearms capacity in Scotland, which is comparable with other forces in the UK.

And the Falkirk area shouldn’t see any notable reduction in officer numbers.

Armed officers are crucial when responding to incidents such as terrorism. Work has been ongoing between relevant agencies to reduce the threat to communities across Scotland.

The threat level nationally remains severe but there is no specific known threat to Scotland. However, Police Scotland must play its part in ensuring our communities safety and security.

Police Scotland believes in the value of an unarmed police service in Scotland.

But the capability that this small group of officers provides is an essential element in preventing and deterring harm in the world.
