Michelle Thomson, newly-elected MP for Edinburgh West, has been appointed shadow secretary of state for business, innovation and skills.
She said: “This is a portfolio ideally suited to my specific skills and experience. As general manager of Business for Scotland during the referendum campaign, I learned a great deal about the challenges and issues that Scotland’s small businesses face in their day-to-day activities.
“Among my first priorities will be to research accurately what the biggest concerns are and to build an exchange with business leaders across the UK so as to identify what matters most to them.
“In March last year, there were around 332,720 private sector enterprises operating in Scotland and I’m one of them! Between them, they provide 1.1 million jobs and account for 99.3 per cent of all private sector enterprises and account for 54.8 per cent of private sector employment.
‘‘My priority is to research what the biggest concerns are and to build an exchange with business leaders.
“I want to make sure the voices of small business owners are properly heard and that they are not ignored in terms of the Tory interest in big businesses whose profits seldom remain in the country.”
