Slim bins will mean trimmer landfill bills for council

The new slim household waste bins were rolled out in Linlithgow last week.

West Lothian Council has introduced smaller grey bins for general waste that goes to landfill to encourage people to recycle more and protect the fortnightly collections as other local authorities opt to move to four-weekly collections.

The council say the slimmer 140-litre bins have been successful so far with more lorries of food and blue bin waste being sent to recycling facilities rather than landfill, which costs more.

The move could save the council more than £2 million – £238,000 a year – in landfill costs. The council spent £3.8m on landfill in 2014/15.

According to the council, other benefits include: an extra 7000 tonnes of grey bin (landfill) waste will be recycled each year in West Lothian; household recycling rates increasing by nearly 10 per cent; more green jobs created to meet the expected increase in recycling.

Drop-in sessions have also been arranged for residents to ask questions about the smaller bins and will be held on Wednesday, October 5 from 6-8pm at Winchburgh Community Centre and then on Thursday, October 6 between 6-8pm at the Lowport Centre.

Executive councillor for the environment Tom Conn said: “The roll out is progressing very well and we are already starting to see evidence that more waste is being recycled.

“The introduction of slim bins is designed to encourage residents to think more about what can be recycled and to make the right choices.

“Ultimately this will ensure that more is recycled and less taxpayers’ money is spent on putting rubbish into landfill, meaning funds can be better spent on other important local services.”

Householders do not need to do anything other than present their bins for collection as normal.
