FIVE kayak-style canoes used by school children were stolen from Beecraigs Fishery on Monday night.

Thieves also took a trailer in the overnight haul that had an estimated total value of around £7,000. Chains and padlocks were cut at the old fishfarm site where the items were stored at Beecraigs Country Park, sometime between 5pm on Monday and 7am on Tuesday.

A spokesperson at the fishery said that thieves had also attempted to steal a motorboat from the reservoir as the chains had been cut, but it was left abandoned in the water.

She added: “It’s a very isolated area. These were items belonging to the education department and were used by pupils at Burnhouse School in Whitburn. So they were stealing from the kids. It’s really unfortunate.”

Police are currently looking at CCTV footage in the hope that the items will be recovered, and advised locals to be aware of anyone trying to sell cheap canoes.
