A FIRM is using scare tactics to frighten consumers in buying thousands of pounds worth of ‘specialist medical equipment’ that may not benefit them in any way, watchdogs have warned.
Consumers are warned to be on their guard against the firm that’s selling items like beds, mattresses and chairs to vulnerable people with health concerns.
The cold callers imply they are health professionals and convince consumers to give medical details before arranging a home visit.
During this, they give the impression they are a doctor or therapist working as a support service on behalf of the NHS or the consumer’s doctor, that they have their medical records and want to improve their quality of life.
In some cases it is claimed people are seriously ill and that the products are lifesaving.
Councillor Charles MacDonald, Falkirk’s environment and community safety convener, said: “This operation is being investigated thoroughly by our Trading Standards officers and other agencies and our advice is to ignore such approaches and if consumers have genuine concerns, to contact their GP for proper medical advice or referral.
“Some of the methods used are quite shocking and would urge anyone approached to contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 if they have any concerns.”
