The first trailer for Warner Bros.' upcoming superhero blockbuster The Batman has been unveiled.

But moviegoers in Glasgow have even more reason to be excited.

That's because the trailer includes shots of recognisable landmarks, with on-location filming for The Batman taking place in Scotland's biggest city earlier this year.

Here's everything you need to know.

When did filming take place?

Filming for The Batman began in Glasgow in February 2020, with the production giving eagle-eyed onlookers a first glimpse of the Dark Knight's new suit.

The production came to the Scottish city for the new Warner Bros and DC Comics movie, facilitating a number of road closures including Wishart Street, Ladywell Street, Cathedral Square, Drygate and John Knox Street.

However, it was thought to be a stuntman seen filming in the city's Necropolis cemetery, rather than Pattinson.

As rehearsals progressed, the costumed man could be seen wiping the rain away from his goggles as the city - thought to be doubling up as Gotham - was hit with a yellow weather warning for wet conditions.

What can be seen in the trailer?

The trailer features multiple shots of Glasgow, although visual trickery and Hollywood's artistic license means the city doesn't look quite the same as it does in real life.

Most noticeable is its Necropolis cemetery, one of the locations where filming was seen taking place earlier in the year.

The location's cameo in the trailer sent fans into a frenzy, with many hypothesising that Batman's famous Batcave lair may well be located "under" the city's graveyard.

"I just freaked seeing the Bat Bike driving through the Necropolis," said one fan on Twitter. "We all have our nerd things."

Another said: "That moment when I spotted The Glasgow Necropolis in the trailer and my heart skipped a beat. So many personal sentiment reasons this hits home."

Other shooting locations included areas in and around Glasgow Cathedral and Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

The Batman is directed by Cloverfield and Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves, who took over directing duties from Ben Affleck, who previously played Batman in in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and 2017's Suicide Squad.

Reports of Robert Pattinson's casting as the iconic superhero first came in May 2019, when Variety reported the actor was in “negotiations” to play The Caped Crusader.

Warner Bros. reportedly allowed Reeves to choose his own Bruce Wayne, and 34-year-old Pattinson becomes the second-youngest actor to ever play Batman on the big screen after Christian Bale, who was 31 when Batman Begins premiered in 2005.

The film is described as a grounded take on the character, and will feature a large ensemble of the Dark Knight’s foes as antagonists.

Zoe Kravitz - daughter of singer/actor Lenny Kravitz who has appeared in films like Mad Max: Fury Road and X-Men: First Class - will step into the shoes of Catwoman.

Colin Farrell will play the Penguin, and Paul Dano is The Riddler.

Westworld‘s Jeffrey Wright is on board as Batman ally Commissioner Jim Gordon, and Andy Serkis will play loyal Batman butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

Also on the cast are Peter Sarsgaard and John Turturro.

When is The Batman released?

The Batman is due for release in UK cinemas on 1 October 2021.
