THIRTY-FOUR years ago, Linlithgow Rugby Club’s Gerry Keating set up a fundraising scheme which has now raised a bumper £50,000 for the club.
The 200 Club kicked off in 1974 and progressed to a 300 Club by 1981 and every year, just after Christmas, the draw is made. As well as the regular £100 prize there is an accumulator which this year hit £700 and which can only be claimed if the winner is present in the clubhouse when the draw is made.
Sadly, this year’s draw winner, W. Morrison, was not present thus forfeiting the accumulator which will be £800 when the next draw takes place.
The numbers are drawn by a different person each year and, over the years, a number of sporting celebrities - local and national - have participated.
This year’s draw was made by Scotland’s top ranked pro golfer and local resident, Stephen Gallacher.
In previous years the drawn has been made by rugby stars Kenny Logan and Douglas Morgan as well as Linlithgow Rose secretary Davie Roy, footballer Donald Ford and, in 2004, by Miss Scotland Lois Weatherup of Linlithgow Bridge.
Said Gerry Keating: ‘‘This year the total profit to the club reached £50,250 and during this bad winter where rugby matches have been scarce it has provided much-needed funds.’’
