Scotland’s junior women’s volleyball squad won silver in the European SC Division Championship finals in Cyprus over Easter.
Four girls from Queensferry and Kirkliston competed in the three game tournament, they were Gemma Ramsay (4), Becky Arthur (8), Sophie Hunter (9) and Katie Sampson (12). All four, who play for the City of Edinburgh under 19 squad, travelled to Cyprus after qualifying for the finals in Malta earlier this year.
The Scotland squad lost out to favourites Cyprus in the opening match and then beat Luxembourg and Liechtenstein to guarantee the silver.
Only once before has a Scottish team senior/junior/male or female won a silver medal at these championships, and never before away from home.
Seventeen-year-old Sophie Hunter received the “best receiver” award of the tournament. Vince Krawczyk, head coach of the Scotland squad said: “I have to thank the stars of the show.
“I wrote at the start of my two year tenure in the position of head coach that we were in a new era of extremely talented young female volleyball players, I also wrote before we travelled to Cyprus that I knew these young women would make the Scottish volleyball community proud of them at the championships. I could not have written two more accurate comments. What a talented group of players!”
