Alston wants that winning feeling to continue

Falkirk midfielder Blair Alston wants the games to keep coming while his team enjoys the feel-good factor of winning.

The Bairns increased their lead at the top of League One on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Peterhead, but kind of stumbled and groped their way to victory after the Blue Toon put up a much-improved second-half performance.

Falkirk had been deservedly ahead by two goals at the interval and created a multitude of chances after a fine display in the first half.

There was plenty to analyse from a home point of view before this Saturday’s away match at Clyde, who are due to resume first-team training tonight (Tuesday) after coronavirus concerns.

But, according to Alston, who scored Falkirk's opening goal on Saturday, if a team wins, then they are happy.

"We managed to see the game out but it was great three points for us,” said the 28-year-old.

"We will hopefully play better next week, score more goals, take our chances and be better defensively as a group. "But, ultimately, if we are winning, we are happy, so it was a good day.”

Reflecting on the game, Alston said: “We thought we started well and created lots of chances. We did what we have't been doing recently - we took goals at good times and we thought we'd put ourselves in a really good position.

"In the first half, we could have scored so many more just with a wee bit more quality in the final third but we went in at half time and said just to make sure we go and do that again.

"We knew they were going to come out and have a go, because everyone does. They threw everything at us and, for large parts of the second half, we just didn't deal with that at all, We let them come on to us and create opportunities.”

The former St Johnstone man added: “It was a weird game. I never really felt they were going to score until they scored – but, at the same time, I felt like we weren't going to score again. It just felt like the game was going to fizzle out.

“It was disappointing – we didn't play well in the second half at all; we never really got going. Even the things we'd done well in the first half, we just couldn't seem to get to grips with in the second, which was disappointing.

"But I think the way the results went for us elsewhere, and us grinding it out in the end, made it a great day for us. We'll play worse and win games, and play better and lose games.”

Alston reckoned he and his team mates would try and recapture Saturday’s first-half performance the next time they took to the field – and be wary of what could happen.

"I don't think there was a lack of effort, it was just maybe wrong choices and poor decision making at times. I think if we'd taken our chances and gone 3-0 up, it would have been totally different, obviously, but we sort of never did that and there was a goal late on that made it a bit nervy. But, otherwise, it's a good three points for us.”
