"Chris has been a massive servant to the club, one of the all-time best players here,” BU manager Max Christie told the Journal and Gazette.

Christie, who chatted long and hard to Donnelly about what he wanted to do, added: "He is one of the boys who has done fantastically well for me since I went to the club.

"He’ll be a big loss. We wanted to keep him but we couldn’t guarantee him the game time he was after at his age. He is speaking to a few clubs and has not decided yet who he’s joining.

"Chris has been a fans’ favourite for a long time and club captain since I came. He has been a real influence and presence about the place.

"But he wants to know that he’s coming on a Saturday and he’s playing. And I couldn’t guarantee him that.

"Dougie is at an age where he can’t be sitting on anyone’s bench, he’s got to be playing.”
