Naivety cost us a point in top-of-the-table clash, says Camelon manager Gordon Wylde

Camelon Juniors manager Gordon Wylde was disappointed in his side’s naivety as they let a point slip through their fingers with a 2-1 home loss against title rivals Whitburn on Saturday afternoon.

The ten-men Mariners were denied a draw in injury time when Grant Hamilton was left free to head home from a corner kick.

On the match, Wylde said: “It wasn’t the best game of football. It lacked a lot of quality. It was a typical top versus second clash and a draw would have been a fair reflection in all honesty. I though we looked okay without being brilliant. Our three substitutes made an impact.

“But we have to take the result for what it is – we were beat by two setpieces again. It comes down to determination for me. We have to be disappointed after that and if we want to win promotion then we need to beat the teams around us and we didn’t today. We’ve now lost to Whitburn and Dunipace at home.”

The boss was left frustrated by the manner in which his team finished the match, with captain Jason Walton having been sent off just four minutes before the winning goal.

The boss added: “He was gutted. He is the club captain. I took him off in the previous midweek game against Heriot-Watt University for the same reason. He had been booked early on and he had another couple of fouls in the game after that.

"I thought he would have learned his lesson in that sense. He has to be a bit more savvy about how he is going about things rather than charging in. Whether that makes a difference at the corner (for the winning goal) I am not sure.

“The guys are saying they had an extra man in there but as a player on the pitch you need to manage things no matter the situation. You take someone off the post and you pick that player up, which they didn’t do.”

Camelon now host Scottish Lowland Football League side Berwick Rangers on Friday night in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup third round.

Ahead of that match, which kicks-off at 7.45pm, Wylde said: “We are only ten games into the league season. There is a long way to go. We now look forward to Friday night under the lights.

"We’ll see who is available at training and who deserves to actually play.”
