Matthew Carder, who was men’s singles runner-up at the Yonex Scottish Nationals in Perth at the start of the month, went one better in his nexxt tournament.
The Queensferry man was crowned men’s singles champion at the British Universities and Colleges Championship in Sheffield.
But the second seed had to work for the title.
He was a game down and on the brink of defeat before fighting back to defeat England’s top seed Alex Marritt in the final 8-21, 24-22, 21-13, to finish top dog in an entry of 192 players. Carder began with a bye and then needed seven wins to take the title.
Carder also partnered Glasgow’s Danny Leinster in the men’s doubles and they scored five wins to reach the semi-finals before falling to eventual winners and top seeds Conor Bambrick and Greg Mairs 21-14 21-17.
Matthew told the Juornal and Gazette: ‘‘I’m pretty happy with my form at the moment and am looking forward to travelling to Portugal next week for an international competition where, again, I hope to do well.’’
