More than 159 primary five children from five local primary schools visited Queensferry Rugby Club last week for a special festival of golf to celebrate this year’s Ryder Cup.
During the four weeks leading up to the event coaches from the club delivered coaching to primary five pupils at their schools in preparation for the event
Hosted by the award-winning Dundas Parks Golf Club in conjunction with Clubgolf Scotland and Queensferry Active Schools, the event was a great success.
Within three separate zones, pupils competed against each other participating in putting, chipping and full swing competitions.
Echline and Kirkliston primaries represented Europe whilst Queensferry, Dalmeny and St Margaret’s represented USA.
The two hour programme resulted in a victory for Team Europe who received winners’ shields.
The group which scored most points was the combined classes from St Margaret’s and Dalmeny, who will compete in the finals of the Junior Ryder Cup at the Hermitage Golf Club in May.
Heather Darling from Active Schools said: “I thoroughly enjoyed working with the Dundas coaching team over the last few months for Clubgolf delivery in the secondary and primaries and also at the festival. I recognise all they do at the club for juniors coming through by providing such a clear pathway of such a high standard- it really is admirable.”
Jim Cowper, the Clubgolf co-ordinator for Dundas Parks, was delighted by the numbers in attendance and has seen the nine-hole venue reap the benefits with over 50 children currently receiving coaching on Thursday nights at the club.
He said: “We have been doing this for five years and it has proved extremely successful as a recruitment ground for the club.
‘‘The kids coming to classes have great fun, participate in special competitions, and get the opportunity to attend our Clubgolf Camp for ages nine to 13, which is scheduled for July 14 to 18.
The Stephen Gallacher Foundation is also running an event at the club on July 21.”
Details of both events can be accessed through www.clubgolfscotland.com of or www.sgfoundation.co.uk.
The golf club has doubled its junior membership in four years. Clubgolf graduates, both boys and girls, now represent the club in national and regional competitions, have performed well in the Linlithgowshire Junior competitions and play for Queensferry High School, who are currently leading in the Edinburgh High School League.
