Linlithgow’s young tennis ace Sammy Ralston was this week competing in the Nike Junior National Tennis Championships.
Sammy Ralston from Linlinthgow, playing for East of Scotland, progressed to the second round of the 12U tournament after defeating Tom Skinner from Middlesex 7-6(2), 6-3 at the West Hants Tennis Centre in Bournemouth.
As the Journal and Gazette went to press (Thursday), Sammy was set to face Johannus Monday from Yorkshire in the second round.
The tournament features some of the best young players in the country as they all battle for the most prestigious accolade in national junior tennis. Past winners of the Nike Junior Nationals include Andy Murray, Heather Watson, Tim Henman and Elena Baltacha.
Marion Stevens, Linlithgow Tennis Club secretary said of Sammy: ‘‘Sammy is one of Linlithgow Tennis Club’s most talented juniors and is ranked number one for 12 and under singles in Scotland East County.
‘‘The club is very proud of his achievements. He is the current 12u title holder of the Linlithgow Junior Open, in which he defeated top players from across the country, and is also the club’s boys’ doubles champion for both 12u and 14u.
‘‘Sammy has had a string of tennis successes throughout the UK this year, most notably winning the 12u singles in the Wirral Open and reaching the 12u finals of the Tayside Open, East of Scotland Junior Championships and the City of Manchester Open.
‘‘Last weekend he also became the Central District 14u boys champion.’’
Marion added: ‘‘We wish him all the best in the Nike Junior National Tennis Championships.’’
