Lothian Running Club's Sarah Inglis in bid to land Olympic Games marathon spot
Lothian Running Club's Sarah Inglis will travel to London from her Canada home this week to try to attain a marathon qualifying time for a place in the Great Britain team for this summer's Olympic Games.
The UK's best distance runners will battle it out on Friday for a place in Tokyo over the Kew Gardens course in the Muller British Marathon.
In her debut marathon in Arizona just before Christmas Sarah agonisingly missed out on the required time of 2 hours 29 minutes 30 seconds by a mere 11 seconds.
The top two finishers who are inside the qualifying standard will be guaranteed a place in the squad. The competitors will run one small lap followed by 12 longer ones, appropriately enough passing Kew's Japanese gardens a dozen times, and will finish in front of the gardens' famous Palm House.
The closed course will be sheltered and flat, and race organisers have worked to smooth out some of the corners, with one straight being almost a mile in length.Pacemakers will be used to make sure the pace is quick in the first 30k, in order to meet the Olympic qualifying time.
The race will start at 8am, spectators will not be allowed inside Kew Gardens on race day, but the race will be streamed on the British Athletics website.
