WEST Lothian Council’s annual sports awards, Celebrating Sport, took place this year at Deans Community High School on Friday, February 25.
Celebrating Sport recognises sporting achievements in West Lothian and celebrates the success of individuals and organisations.
Nominations were invited from the public for individuals and organisations who, in their opinion, had achieved particular success in sport in 2010.
There was a huge response which made the task for the judging panel, which consisted of a previous Celebrating Sport winner, sportscotland, councillor Jim Walker and a member of West Lothian Sports Council, extremely difficult.
Young Sports Person was Shannon Archer.
‘Contribution to School Sport’ was fiercely contested category with Caroline Marshall (Primary PE teacher based at Carmondean) just coming out on top. The runners-up were Armadale Academy PE department and Karin McKenny from Linlithgow Academy and Linlithgow Ladies’ Hockey Club.
Ken Richardson of Linlithgow Rugby Club was honoured with the Senior Sports Person award with 20 years and counting at the club.
He said: “I am delighted - it was quite a surprise. This is a recognition for the whole club.”
Coach of the Year was awarded to Pauline Clark who is a member of West Lothian Artistic Gymnastics Club coaching team.
This year’s recipient of the local Service to Sport Award was Paul Weddell, secretary of the No Limits Sports Club.
Linlithgow Primary School was presented with the West Lothian Primary Schools Swimming trophy.
The guest speaker was Gavin Oattes of Tree of Knowledge.
Executive councillor for culture and leisure, Jim Walker, said: “The competition was extremely tough this year and I’d like to congratulate everyone who was nominated for an award.”
