Karen Matheson is stirring the emotions once more

The folk singer had been due to appear at Falkirk Town Hall tomorrow (Friday) as part of the Tryst Festival, but the event was cancelled at the last minute due to “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances”.

However, fans have been told they will not miss out with Karen due to appear at the Tolbooth Theatre on June 2.

The performance promises to be a memorable event, incorporating a mixture of old and new songs.

Her latest material comes from her third solo album, Urram, which was released in October.

Urram, which is Gaelic for respect, is a bold, imaginative album which captures the character of island life.

But, as Karen explained to The Falkirk Herald, the album turned out to be completely different from the one she had intended.

She said: “When I was writing the album, I had started writing mostly English songs.

“My parents died very close to each other around that time, and I just found that I was in the wrong place.

“I started looking at old photographs and listening to stories, so the album turned out much more traditional and all Gaelic.

“Stirring emotion is what it’s all about for me.

“It’s about invoking and drawing some emotion from every album, and every song.

“It’s very much about emotion and igniting that passion every time I sing.”

Karen has a busy summer coming up, touring both as a solo artist and performing in Scottish and European festivals with Capercaillie.

She said: “Performing with Capercaillie is a completely different energy and it’s full on, but on my own it’s quite quiet and I love that I am able to do both.

“I do feel more exposed in my own setting and it is nerve-wracking, but I love the challenge.”
